Sailing Background
Mike began sailing at the age of twelve in the Port Washington Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program, crewing in 14’ Blue Jays. In a few years, he graduated to a 19’ Lightning. By 16 he was bringing home silver; the next six years he placed in the top five in many District, Atlantic Coast and National Championships, culminating with tenth in the World Championships in Naples, Italy. During the same time he was a sailing instructor at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club and crewed on a great number of cruising and racing boats up and down the Atlantic Coast.
After a three year stint in Korea with Army Intelligence (oxymoron) he joined Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, married Sheila, and bought a 30’ Shields. The Shields provided a great training ground for Sheila and a wonderful family boat for racing, day sailing, fishing and swimming for over twenty years. During the same time Mike and Sheila cruised with friends and chartered, both locally and points south. If asked, Sheila preferred cruising. Mike retired from racing and began dreaming of blue water cruising. After years of searching he found and bought a Tayana 55, which happened to be in Greece. This is where the adventure begins.
Many of the 2000 Migration crew held a bon voyage party for Zeus and Hera (aka Mike and Sheila) before they embarked.
