Ship's Log

MARMARIS TO NEW YORK
August 20 to September 9, 2002

Crew: Al & Alice Woffard and Gerry Connors

August 19, Gerry Connors asked that something heroic be written in this log about him so future generations would know his name. Our Hero threw out his back on the trip and immediately went to bed for four days. His heroics will have to be more verbal than physical. Al & Alice Woffard arrived by limousine from Kusadasi and were very delighted to find Mike on his boat immediately (having had no luck reaching him by phone).

August 20, We dubbed the Migration the "Hospital Ship" when both Alice and Sheila fell into maladies.

August 21, We shopped and then dined at Caria for lunch. That afternoon while sailing for Ekincik we saw flying fish. Sheila, feeling better, cooked a wonderful dinner.

August 22, We sailed to Göcek, a shopping paradise, where Sheila bought pots and antiques. Sheila feeling so much better now, we re-dubbed the Migration the "assisted living ship." Beautiful people, hosts, weather. A very delicious way to live.

August 23, Lunch at Kabab Hospital was super and cheap.

August 24, We sailed to an almost private cove with the clearest water. We felt like we were on a lake surrounded with pines.

August 25, We sailed to the very protected Gemiler Adasi, were we were met by a father and son who tied our stern line to a tree on shore to complete our Med. mooring. This free service came with a reservations and taxi service for their over-priced restaurant. The food was good and the menu price fixed.

August 26, We enjoyed Captain Mike’s carefully brewed coffee in the breathtaking surroundings of clear water and sky. Sheila used up all the "more than day old" bread to create a perfectly delicious bread pudding. We climbed to the top of Gemiler Adasi with its Lycian and Byzantine ruins. After lunch we sailed to Fethiye. On the way we spotted a blowhole, where every forth or fifth wave a plume of mist blew out of a small cave.

August 27, Another gorgeous day ashore. Sheila bought a rug at a very reasonable price as the salesman said his season was over and he "could not eat the rug over the winter." We were escorted by a very old lady with a pregnant goat to a tour of Anystas Tomb (350BC). We then sailed to Ekincik and anchored for the evening.

August 28, On the way to Marmaris we spotted a US-flagged destroyer doing maneuvers with the Turkish Navy and then meandering westward. Mike managed to deal with clients well while steering Migration, the dinghy, ordering dinner, and scrubbing the boat, all by cell phone! This has been the most wonderful trip even for landlubbers like the Woffards. Sheila & Alice had a Turkish bath. I could hear one of the many the calls to prayer from the mosque next door.

August 29, Woffards depart.

August 29 to September 9, Gerry helped the Grinnells decommission, then he took off to do some more touring.
