July 1 to 11, 2007
Crew: Bill Palafox & Mary Lu Dempsey, Joe & Pat La Susa
July 1 - Sunday - Corfu
- Note: Joe and Pat arrived at Migration on June 30.
- 0230...Mary Lu and Bill up in Athens for flight to Corfu…taxi to Syntagma (5 Euro) which connected to X95 bus to airport (3 Euro each)…one hour door-to-door.
- 0650...Mary Lu and Bill arrive Corfu…proceed to NAOK Club, called Mike by telephone and picked-up by Mike and dinghy at 0800.
- 1100...Updated on inverter and computer problems.
- 1200...Corfu walk.
- 2000...Dinner at Del Sol Ristorante.
July 2 - Monday - NAOK Club to Refueling to ACI Marina
Grocery shopping.
Refuel (206.5 L diesel) and water top-off.
Mike pursued inverter technical support.
Slip at Gouvia Marina…excellent facilities (showers, heads, grocery store, laundry service (12 Euro per load), bike rentals.
Lunch on Migration.
Electron tech replaced bent inverter…improved routing…have apparently established good rapport with electronic tech.
"Sticker shock" for inverter remove/replace (1400Euro+ Labor).
Dinner near marina at George's Taverna…all participated in dancing led by Corfiot foursome…excellent lamb…great time!
To bed at midnight.
July 3 - Tuesday - Corfu to Dubrovnik
- Returned Electronic tech's tool bag to "George."
- Dinghy secured on deck.
- Re-packed forward sail locker.
- Steamed northbound.
- Relatively cool (compared to late July-August)…high scattered clouds.
- Sailed for good part of the day and into the night.
- Overnight watches established…2 hours per shift…started at midnight.
- Meals on Migration.
July 4 - Wednesday - Corfu to Dubrovnik - Continued
- 0000 to 0200...Mike and Sheila.
- 0200 to 0400...Joe and Pat.
- 0300????…wind almost died…Joe notified Mike…returned to motoring only.
- 0400...Close encounter with ferry…performed 360.
- 0400 to 0600...Mary Lu and Bill…maintained combo radar, binocular and eyeball watch…4 to 6 traffic-tracking events…all ultimately no consequence.
- Compass headings varied from 305 to 350 degrees based on navigation requirements.
- Good part of day…Sails up!
- 1400...rough seas encountered until we entered protected areas.
- 1645...Entered Gruz…Mike successfully overcame customs' obstacles
- 1800...Arrived Gruz ACI Marina area…anchored in river
- 2000...Bus (1A and 1B) service from marina to Dubrovnik (10 Kuna one-way each)…approximately every 20 minutes.
- 2030...Dinner in Gruz…one of Mike & Sheila's favorite Konobas…good value
- 2300...No fireworks!…patriotic spirit present…Bill disappointed…no sparklers
July 5 - Thursday - Dubrovnik
- 1030...Joe, Pat, Mary Lu and Bill bussed to Dubrovnik for casual walking tour of Dubrovnik Old Town…Audio handsets found to be excellent for this tour as they were loaded with geographic descriptions and considerable history.
- 1030...Mike and Sheila remained with boat.
- 1900...Crew rendezvoused for dinner at Posat Konobe…excellent and expensive fare (845 Kuna)
- 1100...Returned to Migration via bus.
- 2400...All hands turn-in.
July 6 - Friday - Dubrovnik to Korcula
- 0700 to 0800...All awoke relatively early with intention to refuel at ACI Marina…since another boat was going to take ½ hour refueling, we changed our minds and proceeded to a photo op by sea of the Old Walled City of Dubrovnik and on to Korcula.
- Breakfast and lunch while underway on Migration
- 1800...Arrived at Korcula anchorage, Luca Bay, and set a pair of stern lines in combo with bow anchor set…quite a few bathers on shore.
- 2030...Enroute to dinner on dinghy, a brief introduction to Spanish "barco" (Moody 54) Kirke and crew…anchored in same area…set appointment for 1800 cocktails tomorrow.
- 2100...Excellent dinner at Konoba Lanterna…a pleasant and cool evening.
- 2400...Crew turned-in for the night amidst rumors of an overnight bora.
July 7 - Saturday - Korcula
- 0730..."Trickle-awakening" by crew from 0730 to 0900...treated by flute player on the shore…no bora activity overnight.
- 1130...Dinghy to Korcula…Mike to Internet café…others for a brief walking tour.
- 1300...Lunch on beautiful restaurant row adjacent to sea.
- 1430...Mike and Sheila returned to Migration…others walked-toured Korcula
- 1730...Returned to Migration, a brief swim and preparation for 1800 guests.
- 1800...Señor Tomas Guillén and companion, Sandra from Kirke, were guests for cocktails…a very pleasant visit…Bill was delighted at Spanish practice.
- 2000...Dinner at Tanamonte Pizzeria. Good, casual food at reasonable price (435 Kuna). House white wine a better taste value than red.
July 8 - Sunday - Korcula to Hvar via Scedro
- 0500...Carousers awoke most of crew as they tinkered with anchor chain. Event short-lived with no consequence. Their drunken caroling lulled crew back to sleep.
- 0830...Crew up and about…weather clear and calm.
- 0900...Stern line retrieval complete and without event.
- 0915...Underway with photo op of Korcula.
- 0920...Outstanding "Turkish" eggs for breakfast.
- 1005...Hoisted jib.
- 1030..."Wonder Washing" and "The Laundry Alternative" spin dryer.
- 1042...7.5 knots speed over ground.
- 1100...Took in the jib.
- 1150...Encountered white floating plastic bag the markings of high priced marine equipment…Mike pulled throttle back with vigilance as Joe leapt into the dinghy with undaunted courage to salvage the potential treasure. To all's dismay, the bag was filled with rotten fish…. Crew disinfected, Joe quarantined and northbound steaming resumed. Awards ceremony slated for later today.
- 1300...Intermediate destination was island of Scedro and "Manastir," a 16th century monastery.. Crew enjoyed 365 Kuna lunch of anchovies, octopus, bread and beer at restaurant "Kuca Kordic" followed by short visit to monastery ruins. Used one of two mooring buoys available for restaurant clientele.
- 1430...Mike, Joe, Sheila, Mary Lu enjoyed a refreshing swim in this little Scedro bay.
- 1445...Underway for Hvar.
July 9 - Monday - Hvar - Klement Island (Dionis Restaurant) - Split
- 0800...All hands turned-out…breakfast on Migration.
- 0900...Mike to Internet…Sheila shopping…remainder climbed mountain to fort and its tour.
- 1200...Underway.
- 1300...Arrive Klement Island for outstanding lunch at Dionis Konoba
to include a significant "doggie bag" to take with us.
- 1500...Lunch complete…proceeded to a great swim.
- 1530...Underway by sail!….4 full hours!…crew amused by "team" Scrabble and cards.
- 2000...Dropped anchor at Split.
- 2100...Crew to a shore walking tour with Sheila…Mike and Bill to Internet.
- 2230...Nightcap on superb lunch leftovers and Brussels truffles.
- 2400...All hands turn-in.
July 10 - Tuesday -
- 0830...All hands turned-out…greeted with low thunder over mountains and overcast skies.
- Breakfast on Migration
- 1015 to Split…Mike to Internet…Sheila to Laundromat…4 others to walking tour of Split.
- 1300...All rendezvous for lunch and excellent pizza.
- 1700...Return to boat…refueled diesel and water at INA.
- 1900...Tied up at Marina…marina docking assistant remarked, "What an excellent crew!"
- 2000...All showered at marina which has excellent facilities and friendly staff.
- 2030...Crew enjoyed delicious "peca" onshore…..a great last onshore meal!
- 2200...Erratic rain shower forced Mike to rush to close-up boat as the rest of crew enjoyed ice cream.
- 2230...Crew return to Migration for nightcap.
July 11 - Wednesday -
- 0000-0500...Relatively strong wind throughout night. Wind generator had a ball.
- 0730...All hands turned-out…Joe, Pat, Mary Lu and Bill busy packing.
- 0800...Joe off to buy eggs.
