ANTALYA TO FETHIYE
August 15 to 25, 2003
Crew: Andrew Grinnell, Colin Schneider, Mary Lu Dempsey and Bill Palafox
August 15, 2003 - Friday
- Location at start of day: Antalya dockside, with nearby showers and latrine
- Arrived: 19:00 - via Turkish Air domestic flight from Istanbul: Andrew Grinnell, Colin Schneider, Mary Lu Dempsey & Bill Palafox;
all in high spirits and looking forward to their maiden voyage on the Yacht Migration.
- Dinner at Marina Restaurant - all enjoyed the various Turkish treats, but unable to spell or pronounce them.
- Weather- hot & sunny, calm
August 16, 2003 - Saturday
- Location at start of day: Antalaya
- Departed/time: 10:00
- Arrived: Phaselis - 12:01 - lunch at anchor. Andrew was hungry!!!
- Arrival: - 17:00 - Cineviz anchored.
- Activities: - swim, snorkel, fish and explore in this beautiful little bay. Numerous Guletts also anchored Med stem/stern
near the shore, we reset our anchor and swung free and secure all night.
- Dinner: aboard Migration - gourmet Sheila was at it again impressing us all with all sorts of surprises. Great Keftes & Tzedziki.
- Observations: Boat in good order, spirits high, the virgin crew amazed by the geography and geology.
- Weather: hot & sunny calm hi 90's
August 17, 2003 - Sunday
- Departed: - Cineviz 11:15 via Sluada
- Sailed: Main & Jib 1+ hr.
- Arrived: Gokkaya Liman 18:00 anchored.
- Activities: Swim, snorkel, explore the beach dinked into a deep cave for some photo ops. Bought 4.5 L of outboard gas. Andrew never gives up. Andrew caught an 8" Spanish Mackerel, the first fish caught by Migration since cruising her. We enjoyed making chevishe cocktail party. Dinner at anchor. Night Club disco. Mike, Sheila, Mary Lu & Bill had a great time dancing. Colin and Andrew danced and then some late into the night with an international vacation crowd from the gullets, but Colin narrowly escaped with his life, due a misunderstanding with the gulett Captain and his wife.
- The day's highlight: Colin's nightmare and sleepwalking, actually bolted out of his bunk while reliving this experience with the angry Captain.
August 18, 2003 - Monday
- Location at start of day: Gokkaya Liman
- Departed: 12:00, Bill at the wheel.
- Activity: 13:40 - Kekava Lagoon sight see
- Arrival: 14:30 Kas dockside slip
- Activities: Kas Bar for a cool refreshing beer and conversation. Hike the Town, Swim in the icy fresh spring waters at the nearby resorts and beaches off the rocks.
- Cocktails: Mike with what looks like Turkish tea and Andrew a tall cold Effes.
- Dinner: Kas Restaurant
- Andrew and Colin partied the night away with international gullet guests till 3 AM
- Weather: hot & sunny & calm
August 19, 2003 - Tuesday
- Layover in Kas, on anchor
- Activity: Private car with guide, Safar. We drove over mountains for 1 1/2 hr to Saklikent Gorge. The gorge is a spectacular sight of rock eroded over time, by the rushing waters. We hiked, strolled and climbed through icy water and over steep rocks to eventually walk through a pounding waterfall from about 30 feet over our heads. Safar, occasionally needed to act as a step ladder so we could ascend the rocks. His grand finale was a back flip off a rock into 3' of water. We ate lunch of grilled fish and beer in a reclining table/cushion arrangement on a floating platform, cooled by the deep waters just underneath the platform.
- Andrew & Colin took a charter boat to do deep dive to 80' they loved it.
- Swim at local rock cliff (Mary Lu & Bill)
- Dinner at Bahce Meza restaruant
- Weather: hot, sunny, calm
August 20, 2003 - Wednesday
- Departed: Kas 10:00
- Arrived: Gemiler Adase 14:00. Anchored Med stem stern to a large rock
- Activity: swim, snorkel explore the clears waters and rocky shore.
- Visited the nearby steep, rocky Island. Paid 4,000,000L to hike up and explore this ancient Byzantine Village. Remnants of this village were everywhere, to include homes, tombs, and 4 churches from 400 to 700 AD. Presently a Japanese archaeological group from Kyoto, Japan involved in excavation and study of this historic site.

- Weather: hot sunny calm
August 21, 2003 - Thursday
- Departed: Before leaving. Turkish breakfast. Gemiler 13:40
- Arrived: Fethiye 14:40 - anchored
- Activities: stroll the harbor market area, made transportation arrangements for Andrew & Colin as well as for Bill & Mary Lu. The Boys thoroughly enjoyed their Turkish Bath. We all dined at the local restaurant in AC comfort, but a quiet Thursday eve, due to religious restrictions after 8:30 PM. The boys transported us back to the boat with the leaky dink, and returned to party??? the night away.
- Weather- hot sunny calm
- Crew status- Skipper and First Mate fatigued after long night on stand-by awaiting return of the dink and young crew.
- Other- Re: young crew...Classified info!!!
August 22, 2003 - Friday
- Andrew and Colin arrived back at the anchored Migration just in time to brush their teeth and dress. Boys departed in semi-alert state at 07:30 via dink for bus to Dalaman airport to Istanbul for 1 1/2 days of the sights, then on to Paris and USA.
- Departed: Fethiye 13:15 Fire in the mountainous area beginning to spread due to the shifting winds and the haze and smell were evident.
- Arrived: Gocek 16:15 Motor-Sailed part way on Jib.
- Incident: Rented blue Jay "T" boned Migration's port side 3" in diameter. The next day the inexperienced British sailor paid Mike
70 Lbs. sterling towards gel-coat repair.
- Dinner ashore in the lovely harbor market area. Mary Lu acquired her first Turkish jewelry.
- Weather: sunny, hot, calm. Cool sleeping up forward.
August 23, 2003 - Saturday
- Housekeeping, Dink Repair with bung plug. Serious comparison shopping and analysis of toilet seats and calcium deposits solutions.
- Activity: Lunch @ Kebab Hospital. It was great. Shop for provisions (big beers).
- Departed: Gocek 14:00
- Arrived: Fethiye 17:35. Anchored
- Activities..Sheila and Mary Lu partook of Turkish bath
- The day's highlight(s)...Turkish bath!
- Weather...hot, calm, sunny
- Migration's status...Dink temporary repair holding up. Water hose connected to bottom of hot water heater blew and Mike
repaired it in record time.
- Provisions...far gone conclusion that powdered Gatorade, plenty of water to drink and ice cold beer a must for this activity.
- Internet access...excellent at this anchorage
August 24, 2003 - Sunday
- At Fethiye anchorage
- Crew status....Mary Lu and Bill caught a bus for the journey to Selcuk and Ephesus. This experience has been the highlight of their summer and they express sincere "Thanks" and appreciation to Sheila and Mike.
- Other...Bill & Mary Lu later reported their harrowing experience aboard the Turkish railroad from Selcuk to Izmir. The recommended this be done only once in a lifetime, if that.
